Abstract

|
Some unknown substances were extracted with various solvents from the root of Welsh onion. The substances extracted with any extraction solvent used inhibited root growth of chrysanthemum and radicle elongation of compositae crops seed (lettuce, marigold, aster, pot-mum, zinnia). The substances extracted with distilled water showed higher inhibitory activity than those with organic solvents. The inhibitory activity obviously increased when water extraction was performed for 15-45 days. The substances, showing inhibitory activity on root growth of chrysanthemum, were clarified as a stable substances during extraction processes and heat treatment.
